Magento 2 Product Types: Grouped Products

Written by Ryan Copeland

Magento 2 gives merchants a variety of product types that they can use to build their product catalogues with. In this article a member of our Magento 2 development team is going to explore grouped products.

What is a grouped product in Magento 2?

The clue really is in the name. A grouped product consists of a group of simple products that are presented to a customer as a group. We explain what simple products are in an earlier article in this series.

An example of where you might want to use a grouped product on your ecommerce site is if you sell cameras and you want to incentivise customers to purchase add ons. You might sell a camera, case, memory card, additional lens and warranty as a grouped product. When a user lands on the product page, they can chose whether to buy all of those products, a select few, or just one.

What is the benefit of using grouped products?

The benefit of using grouped products is that it provides an incentive for customers to purchase more than one item, increasing the average order value. If a user lands on the simple product page (i.e. a camera), they may simply add it to their basket and checkout. However, if they see a group of products that can be purchased together, they are more likely to add those products to their basket from the grouped product page. It makes it really easy for them to find what products can be bought together and saves them time having to scroll through your product catalogue.

How do you create grouped products?

Creating grouped products in Magento 2 is fairly straightforward. Before you do so, you will need to create the individual simple products that will form the grouped product. Once you’ve done that, navigate to Catalogue > Products > Add Product > Grouped Product. There are a number of required fields under Product Details so you will need to complete those. To add your simple products to the grouped product, navigate to Grouped Products and click Add Products to Group. From the list, you can select the checkbox to the left of each product that you want to add to the group.

Final word

Using grouped products is a great way to incentivise customers to purchase multiple items on your ecommerce site, whilst also making it easier for your customers to find what they are looking for.
